Featured: winter skin and the festive season

LED masks, vitamin C and party make-up: our guidance for getting through the colder months.

Why rethink your routine as winter nears?

When the days shorten and the heating comes back on, the skin is quick to show it: a duller complexion, an itchy scalp, tired eyes at the end of the afternoon. Many readers then reach for an LED mask, a new serum or a gift set picked up in a hurry, without being sure what to expect from it. This post opens our seasonal selection on face, hair and nails, built on one idea: understand what you put on your skin before adding another bottle to the shelf.

What are the best vitamin C serums?

With the explosion of vitamin C serums on the market, it’s becoming difficult to make an informed choice from all the options available. What makes the decision even…

Vitamin C or retinol: which serum suits you?

A serum is chosen for one clear need rather than for a broad promise on the box. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that targets dullness and uneven tone, helping the skin cope with daily exposure to light and pollution. Retinol works on cell renewal and suits fine lines and a rough, uneven texture. A dedicated eye serum is lighter and gentler, designed for the thin skin around the eyes where a face product can sting. Start with the concern you notice every morning in the mirror, and you will avoid stacking formulas that work against each other or simply cancel each other out.

Timing matters as much as the active ingredient. Vitamin C belongs to the morning, under moisturiser and sunscreen, where it supports the skin through the day. Retinol is kept for the evening, because it makes skin more sensitive to light, and it is best introduced slowly, a few nights a week at first, before moving to daily use.

Tolerance is the last question to settle. Skin that feels tight, red or prickly after cleansing copes poorly with concentrated actives, so calm it before adding anything new. A patch test on the neck or behind the ear for a few days limits unpleasant surprises. Layering retinol with exfoliating acids on the same night calls for caution, and so does pure vitamin C on reactive skin. When doubts persist, or when stretch marks, scars or persistent redness are the real concern, a dermatologist's opinion is worth more than another experiment at home.

Our Christmas beauty gift guide suggests matching each present to the person who will open it, and a warm cup often finds its place next to a new skin care set. For tea lovers, a calendrier de l'avent de thé turns every December evening into a short ritual: a different blend each day, a moment to slow down and a gift that lasts the whole month.
